The Back Story: I wrote this song as a congregational meditation for a Maundy Thursday service.  It is inspired by Isaiah 58, and asks the questions which have always plagued all religious movements: what are the things that make for true holiness?  Is it the ceremony, or the service to others?  Is it personal piety, or personal sacrifice?  Do we invest in building up our own temple, or in creating a level and hospitable place for all of God's children?

Congregational Response
What is the fast we bring to our God?  What is the fast God craves?
What is the fast we bring to our God?  What is the fast God craves?

Hear, O hear, O Israel, you act as though you are mine,
You fast and you feast but the lost and the least
Are pushed down time after time.

Hear, O hear, you people of God, your festivals all come to naught,
When your hearts turn to stone 'gainst the one who's alone,
When against a brother you've fought.

Hear, O hear, my people the church, and you will know my true call:
Free the oppresed and give only the best,
For those who've suffered the fall.

Hear, O hear, you seekers of me, and learn just what I require:
To love and forgive, invite the dying to live,
To make new space at the fire.

Hear, O hear, you people of light, if you will do all these things.
Swift as the dawn your salvation will come,
With all the blessings that brings.

Hear, O hear, you children of Christ, your light surely will shine,
My glory before - the Way and the Door -
Will show to the world you are mine.
