The Back Story: Written for my children, this is a reflection on one of my favorite quotes from Gandhi, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."  It is so tempting to focus on what other people are doing wrong, becoming critical and judgmental of them.  It is also tempting to focus so much on how bad things are in the big picture that we feel completely overwhelmed, and find ourselves paralyzed and despairing.  Both of these views create the same problem: we are focusing on something over which we have no power!  (Likely that's what's appealing about them as well.  No power = no responsibility.)  But this quote offers us a simple, gospel-inspired solution to both these problems: take care of your own life!  It requires so much energy to lead a life of love and forgiveness, of generosity and healing old wounds that, if we were to really commit ourselves to it, we wouldn't have time for much else!

Chorus
You must be the change that you want to see,
You must be the change that you want to see,
You must be the change that you want to see,
You must live the life indeed.

 Verse 1
If you think there's too much hate in the world,
You can forgive.
If you think there's too much need in the world,
Then you must start to give.

Chorus

Verse 2
You can spend your time pointing out every crime
Committed by someone else.
Or you can lift, share your own gift,
And bring the light yourself.

Chorus

Verse 3
There is one God who cares for us all,
Whatever race or creed,
If you want God's love to spread in the world,
Then you must be the seed!
